Several months ago I installed an RE SE12 in a generic sealed box because I didn't want to worry about building a ported or anything. But now I'm thinking I want to get a ported box built to the specifications of RE Audio cause I'm just not really happy with how loud it gets in the sealed box.
Am I going to notice a huge difference in SPL?
And will my fast hardcore songs still sound ok in a ported?
Thanks!

For ported boxes the lower the tuing the quieter it will generally be... but the better it'll be for fast bass notes. A small sealed box is best for those fast bass passages tho. But yeah.... a properly built ported box should be decently louder... talking like 3-4dB louder, more if its tuned above 35hz (but with a shorter playable range).

Additionally, if the box is built right, there will be no less "quickness", this is a misconception.
This comes from the different response curves. Sealed boxes in a car usually have fairly high Qs with alot of emphasis on the upper bass (50+Hz) and this is where you percieve alot of quickness (double bass pedals, toms, etc). The problem arises when someone builds a ported box that has more low end than the sealed alignment and then this just gets exagerated when you factor in cabin gain. The fact is that you haven't lost any of the band the sealed sub had, or you have lost any transients, it is just that it is all drowned out by all the extra bottom end response you now have.
Don't tune any lower than 30Hz and you'll probably be real happy, if you have a Sub Sonic Filter, consider using it around your tuning frequency also...

I love ya like a brother.... but you know i'd have to argue some minor semantic details with you if you were here right now.
For the original poster... what he said is true.... there are some very minute details called group delay... but yeah.... most of it has to do with how emphasized the low end is. Thus why tuning a ported box low (even for car use) is a great idea for sound quality. I was happy with my tangband 8's when they were ported @ 28 hz. For cars I think many subs do well with tuning in the 25-35hz region.
