I have a mac and a PC. I regularly transfer files between both with no problems at all. My mac allows me to transfer files to the pc as simple as if they were both pc's. They both read all sorts of different video, audio, picture and text extensions with no issues whatsoever.

Maybe the Mac software wouldn't burn your file because your file was a piece of shit that you recovered from a deleted and corrupt disk using pirated recovery software which may or may not have infected it with a virus.

Besides, school is pointless.

Or maybe you have no idea that rendering and playblasting will export AVI's and TIFF's, .MOV's and IFF's. If the file is read by Maya, it is not corrupted. Maya will scan every bit of the file and one byte is corrupted, it will not read. Maybe you don't realize that every single computer at this school is so fucking locked down that they only have a basic set of software tools and nothing can be loaded on them. I also tried .nrg, bin/cue, straight up video_ts. Just try to use final cut pro for forty straight hours to edit video without it crashing. As opposed to Avid or Vegas.

I should have bought a new optical drive when I made the move to this pc. I wasn't necessarily surprised that it was messed up, especially considering that the computer was subjected to broken AC in my dorm room but I had no choice but to use it. Yes, I realize that all computers are subject to fail at any time. That's still no excuse for macs not to work.

Let me explain how it works with getting a file out of Maya.

You have a file, .mb which stands for maya binary. You render it our, and you get a series of images, any image format you want really. I prefer to use .tiff or .iff, depending on what I want to do with the alpha channel of the image. You compile the image series into any sort of file you want with Aftereffects or Shake. It depends on what I want to do with it. You export that file to an uncompressed video file, or you can compress it. Again, it depends on what you want to do with the end result.

In my case, I did two things. I output the uncompressed video file using both avi and .mov because I hadn't decided what authoring software to use with it. I ended up using Vegas on the PC. Then I output that to an image or a DVD. It will make a straight DVD with video_ts. It was then I realized that my dvd drive, three years old and used at least once a day, was not going to burn. Not being able to get a new one on such short notice, I output to an image, put it on my portables and go to the pc labs in the dorm. My last dvd turned out to be a coaster.

The second thing I did, when I realized I had to use a mac, was take the movie back into aftereffects and make a .mov with it. I took the .mov that I used sorenson video 3 on, to use on the mac. Put it into idvd, no dice. Put it into DVD studio pro, wouldn't work. Keep in mind, I took the image sequence, which is universal, and output them to .mov on the apple version of aftereffects. There is absolutely no reason besides my seemingly mac-incompatible body that it shouldn't work. Had the DVD drive on my computer worked, I wouldn't have had to use mac's at all. But there is still no reason that it shouldn't work. Explain to me, knowing that Maya only outputs images from non corrupt files, that it be this difficult to make a dvd on a mac. idvd wouldn't even burn a dvd, it shut down. The same thing happened to every student in the class with this project. And two of the students prefer to use mac for their work from start to finish.

WTF does a virus have to do with anything?.... I'm sorry... but Virus'.... viri? (which is it?) are not the Digital Armageddon that the media has told the lemming public they are. 1.... there was never any evidence to suspect a virus. 2: having virus code stored within a file will not cause a burning program not to burn.... or a video program not to play video.... or a word document not to open up in word.

Thats not how it works.

Also.... in terms of what actually is a virus, and what is not.... Most of what people call a virus... is not a virus, but to use an analogy... is more like a sprained ankle. Code, that is unable to propagate itself, but.... is an annoyance none the less.

Flak, I feel for you.... I'm not a fan of iTarded products. All the proprietary designs are ridiculous considering Macs make up a very small percentage of all computer (or even PC) sales.
However.... Mac has made some good steps in the right direction... I like how they are using CISC -x86 chips now made by intel instead of RISC's (by motorla & IBM). If I had money... i'd be very tempted to buy a MacBook Pro and then wipe it clean and throw Vista or XP on it.

back on topic... Flak... great job, i understand how you feel, i've never had such an extreme problem... but, I have been through similar. I can't believe school is already out.... Man... time is flying.

hmm... you were using maya.... some respectable stuff you got going on.

in all seriousness, why would you buy a macbook and put windows on it? I'm just not seeing what makes them worth an extra 50-100% cost, for the price, you can get a much better "PC" based laptop and not fight with apples sometimes painfully horrible support if/when it breaks. (not that dell has phenominal support by any means)
