Thanks everybody. Hobbes, that was a good read.

So in the $200-250 range, or stretching upward if it's a really good deal, what is the camera to get? Am I on track with the Panny?

I really like Canons. :p

Canon A570IS is $250 at BB and is the cheapest Canon to have IS. Allows full manual control too. 4x optical zoom compared to 6x for the Panny though.

Review for the LZ7's predecessor, the LZ5

http://www.dcresource.com/reviews/panasonic/dmc_lz5-review/index.shtml

No manual control except for white balance. Noisy even at ISO 80!

I'm not sure what the other differences are between the LZ7 and 5... (I'm at work now, so I don't have THAT much time to look it up :p )

Man, the panasonic cameras look great on paper... but the pictures are NOISY!@!

My friend has an FX07 and even in good lighting you get VERY significant noise. Untill they fix the noise issues don't thouch a panasonic.

For a cheap nice camera... look at the fuji F20 or F30. Those cameras are fantasic! 3x zoom, but very nice. Also the Canon 570 as mentioned is a nice little AA camera.

I got to play with a friends S800IS last night and I think I may be sold on the Canon 570IS. The menu system is fantastic, the macro mode took excellent pics, and the 570 has 4x optical zoom, which I think is plenty. I'm going to read the review you linked right now, Hobbes - thanks!

I will check out the Fujis and the Canon in person today after work. I might be bringing home a new toy :)

The 800IS, afaik doesn't have manual modes (M - Manual, A - Aperture Priority, S - Shutter Priority, or P - Programmed Auto). But I've played with one too (Japanese version) and it was awesome and made great pictures in the auto mode.

I like the "P" mode because it gives you a tad more control compared to the regular Auto mode... but that's just me, and I like to fiddle with things. The scene modes (portrait, night, etc...) should work fine for normal shooting.

After reading the reviews linked on this site [and some other info I Googled], playing with the S800 IS again [it does have full manual control], and checking the A570 IS at Best Buy, I pulled the trigger. I got the A570 IS, the Canon camera pouch, and a Sanyo eneloop NiMH battery and charger kit from Amazon. It should be here in a week or so and I can comment then once I've used it. Thanks for everything guys!
