Does anyone have external HD recommendations?

Postby JimJ[VT] » Sun Jun 17, 2007 2:03 pm

Looking for an external HD, something in the 300-500GB range. Need it to be relatively user friendly, going to be used to keep my FLAC collection so it doesn't take up space on my 80GB internal.

Any brands I should be looking at? I see Western Digitals selling for $130ish on Ebay...

Ah yes, but it's 3-5 weeks from Dell, whereas it's 3-5 days from Newegg ;). I'd pay the extra $2 to get it in 1/10 the time. And for $97, that's hella cheap, but it's still a bargain at $125 for 500 GB.

i got a 320gig Maxtor thats been flawless the past 3 months... Its on almost 24/7 too.

got it at bestbuy as a closeout item for $100 (usually was $200)
my advice... get as big as you can... cause it fills up quickly. Also, I wouldn't be too worried about buffer. I mean... buffer isn't going to be the bottleneck... its going to be the speed of the harddrive and the USB interface. unless you have a 1gig buffer its not going to make a big difference. unless all you do is with 4meg files... in which case you wouldn't be needing a 300gig harddrive

The files in FLAC tend to be fairly large, so having a bigger buffer than say, 2MB is nice. 16MB may very well be overkill, but if you can get it and it doesn't cost more, if he ends up putting movies and what not on there, it's going to be money well spent. :)
