well I tried taking it apart this afternoon because I wanted to put off studying. There were like 1000 screws and apparently i didn't find them all because I couldn't get it taken apart (It was stuck in the middle, but I couldn't find a screw anywhere). So I was like ****, guess I'll just have to send it in. So I put it back together and restarted with plans to go to the dell website (how I would actually get there without being able to type the address in I was going to figure out along the way), but then my keyboard worked!
so it must just be a bad connection like you thought Marshall. I bet if I had beat it with a hammer it would have worked, I'll try that next time.
Stupid keyboard

You can possibly find a step by step instruction with pictures on how to take the keyboard off if you do a search....i lucked up and found one for my HP...you might get lucky...

It's not hard. On most of the dells there is a trim ring around the outside of the keyboard and maybe a few screws on the back that hold it down. Pop the trim ring off very carefully and it will at least let you see if the cable is loose. If it's not that kind of laptop, you can take the case off. But don't loose any screws. A new keyboard is $25-$45 for a dell, and $100 in labor tops. I don't remember what we charge for that at the shop. Probably less than $100. It's something anybody with a lot of patience can do. Be very methodical, lay your screws out exactly like you took them out on a piece of paper or in little cups or something. That's the hardest part is not loosing the screws and not cracking the trim along the part near the screen (sometimes where the power buttons are).

i've had 3 dell laptops and none of them had a trim ring to take off to get to the keyboard....
You might just be over looking a screw.
Or not brave enough to remove the keyboard cause its clicked into place by something or yet hung up on something...WHICH IS FINE....if you are not confident enough to do it...then don't.
Have someone else look at.
