Memory Latency...so confizzled.

Postby bass_lover1 » Thu Sep 09, 2004 6:20 pm

Lucky me at the end of this month I get to upgrade from my 4 year old PC to a brand new one. Ok, since I like saving money, and enjoy doing things my self, I've decided to build my own by buying from newegg.com (you probably read my other topic) anyway, I've got it all pretty much figured out...except the memory, more specifically the latency, what the hell is it? And what the hell does it mean? Will a person like me (minimal gaming...almost none actually) notice a difference from supposedly faster memory?

Also, I'm looking at Kingstong HyperX PC 3200 512MB ram with a 2-3-2-6 1T latency. This any good? Should I look elsewhere?

Thanks.

Also, question about the processor...well not really the processor its self (XP 3200+) but, would it be a better idea to spend the extra 20 or so dollars and get the retail version that comes with a heatsink and fan, or should I just buy those from somewhere else?

bout the heat sink and fan......you plan to overclock this processor at all? if not...go with a good coper heat sink and a nice sized quiet fan.

if so...go water :D

svc.com has some good stuff.

water is a pain. trust me

memory latency can effect some speeds, and overclockibility. but other than that it has very little effect.

svc.com dammit thats the site I've been looking for...thanks :D

My friend got his heatsink and fan from there worked out well for him so, why not...thanks guys.

Back to the ram, is that Kingston HyperX good RAM? And would it be worth spending another 100 or so dollars to get a Gigs worth of it?

It's pretty good stuff I'd say...

OCZ, Mushkin, Corsair, and Geil rank among the best IMO...

The lower the timings the better....(middle two numbers yield the biggest performance hike)

If you can find anything that runs PC3200 @ 2-2-2-5 it = gold...albeit...it's pretty expensive...

Can I ask why you are going XP and not A64?

Also look into Crucial's Ballistix memory :) They're up there with the best of the bunch.

That's a typo on my part...meant to say AMD 64 3200+

I've heard that memory latencies are almost a moot point on the 64 bit cpu because it runs so fast anyway...ever hear of that? Any truth to it if you have.

I've got pretty much everything picked out right now...comes to around 1150 w/ a 17" LCD panel...which makes me very happy :D

The stuff you have now should get you by for a while....

If you want the best stuff for the A64 boards, go for a stick of OCZ 3700EB

3700EB has been running tight timings at 3-2-2-8 or so...and the A64 boards LOVE it...especially when you decide to overclock...

I'll give you my take on the 3700EB as soon as I finish installing my OC MONSTER DFI Lanparty UT 250 tonight...it + 3200 + 3700EB = world record HTT of 425 :)
