dad comes out after work...we get battery...we put it in car....so i can at least drive it to their house. drive.....take out old alt....put new one in....lights all go bye bye...windows roll up and down again :)

i'm excited....$90 alt.....$50 battery....and i'm golden.

this weekend.

nice job. where'd you find the alt so cheap?

and yeah, I hate those heat shields. my dad's expedition had a rattle in it as well. my muffler developed a small hole but it was under the heat shield so I couldn't just put a patch on it. so I figured if I was taking the muffler off, may as well just put a new one back on. they're cheap enough with my discounts.

My previous post was directed at Derek, not you Flak...

flak_monkey wrote:With that in mind, and not to hijack Derek's thread, do you think a dying alt could cause erratic idle (first too low, then too high) with cold starts? My car has been being a b*tch.

That can be many things, from spark plugs to pistons to some random thingy involved in controling your idle. It could just be the cold temp, but it all depends on the vehicle though. I'm guessing your car is fuel injected, so I wouldn't think cold would be the lone cause right off the bat...I would suspect piston or gasket trouble.

The old car I just took out of storage today started right up and ran perfectly right out of the garage and I've had no issues with it. Last fall, in cold weather, it idled rough in neutral and in drive it was dumping so much fuel in that I could get up to 55mph without even touching the gas pedal...Just because of the cold.
